Self-specific priming effect.

چکیده
Priority of the "self" is thought to be evolutionarily advantageous. However, evidence for this priority has been sparse. In this study, subjects performed a gender categorization task on self- and non-self target faces preceded by either congruent (same gender as target) or incongruent (different gender) periliminal (33ms) or subliminal (17ms) primes. We found that subliminal primes induced a priming effect only on self target faces. This discovery of a self-specific priming effect suggests that functional specificity for faces may include timing as well as spatial adaptations.

Self-Construal Priming Modulates Self-Evaluation under Social Threat
Previous studies have shown that Westerners evaluate themselves in an especially flattering way when faced with a social-evaluative threat. The current study first investigated whether East Asians also have a similar pattern by recruiting Chinese participants and using social-evaluative threat manipulations in which participants perform self-evaluation tasks while adopting different social-eval...
متن کاملSelf-esteem buffers the mortality salience effect on the implicit self-face processing
Previous works on the Terror management theory (TMT) have shown that thoughts of one’s own death provoke avoidance of the self-focused state and that self-esteem could buffer the deeply rooted anxiety and fear of death. However, surprisingly little research has examined this issue directly. In Study 1, we investigated 112 healthy adults who completed two explicit self-face processing tasks. Hig...
متن کاملA Study in Pink: What Determines the Success of Gender-specific Advertising?
Gender-specific marketing gains importance as women become more influential as consumers. The study investigated an efficiency of two approaches to gender-specific marketing: designing a stereotypically “feminine” product and priming an interdependent self-construal with an advertising scenario. Female participants (N=160) evaluated four advertisements for a soft drink with feminine/gender-neut...
متن کاملThe negative compatibility effect with relevant masks: a case for automatic motor inhibition
For many years controversy has surrounded the so-called "negative compatibility effect" (NCE), a surprising phenomenon whereby responses to a target stimulus are delayed when the target is preceded by an unconscious, response-compatible prime. According to proponents of the "self-inhibition" hypothesis, the NCE occurs when a low-level self-inhibitory mechanism supresses early motor activations ...
متن کاملExplicit and implicit stereotype activation effects on memory: do age and awareness moderate the impact of priming?
Two studies examined the effects of implicit and explicit priming of aging stereotypes. Implicit primes had a significant effect on older adults' memory, with positive primes associated with greater recall than negative primes. With explicit primes, older adults were able to counteract the impact of negative stereotypes when the cues were relatively subtle, but blatant stereotype primes suppres...
